Frequently Asked Questions: AFC Leather Handbag Cleaning Kit
What does the AFC Leather Handbag Cleaning Kit include?
-
Leather Cleaner (200 ml)
-
Leather Conditioning Cream (200 ml)
-
Microfibre polishing cloths
-
This combination provides a complete cleaning and conditioning routine for small leather goods.
Why is a specialised kit necessary for handbags?
Handbags accumulate body oils, makeup, and dye transfer in ways furniture doesn’t. A dedicated kit ensures the formulas are gentle, residue-free, and compatible with high-contact leathers used in handbags, belts and accessories.
How do I clean a leather handbag using this kit?
- Wet the leather first with some warm water not hot
- Spray the leather cleaner in small areas at a time (Before starting test in a small inconspicuous and check for any changes in the leather or colour removal) Do not proceed if anything has changed
- Use a soft cloth or soft bristle brush to apply the cleaner in small circular motions. If using a soft bristle brush check that there are no adverse reactions as some leathers are not pigmented properly and colour can be removed
-
Wipe off residue with a damp cloth, then allow to dry.
-
Once the leather is dry apply the conditioning cream sparingly and evenly with a cotton or microfiber cloth.
-
Massage it into the pores lightly.
-
Leave to absorb, then buff off any excess gently.
Are all leathers compatible with this kit?
NO: They are only suitable for leather types such as sealed, pigmented, top-coated, or waxed leather work well.
DO NOT: Use on suede, nubuck, or raw aniline leather, which require specialised cleaning by professionals.

How often should handbags be cleaned and conditioned?
For frequently used bags, clean monthly and condition every 3–4 months. For stored or occasional-use items, condition before and after long storage to prevent drying or cracking.
Does the kit help with dye transfer or stains?
Yes, it removes mild stains and surface grime. For heavy dye transfer, use AFC Dye Transfer Cleaner before conditioning.
Can this kit be used on coloured or designer handbags?
Absolutely. The formulas are non-darkening and safe for most premium leather handbags but always make sure you identify the leather as it is only suitable for top coated and sealed leathers. Always perform a patch test on an unseen area first.
