Floor protectors are an essential part of keeping floors in good condition. The furniture items at the top of the list for causing the most damage to wood floors are chairs.
It makes sense because chairs are moved the most frequently and usually with weight on them. Without some form of chair leg protector being fitted it’s inevitable that damage is going to occur on wooden floors.
Some chair legs come with feet attached to them but 99% of the time these are not floor protectors and are there just to make the furniture slide but not to stop damage.
These feet more often than not will need to be removed in order to fit proper floor protectors.
What are the best floor protectors for chairs?
I have written an extensive article on this subject with product comparisons and the upsides and downsides of each option.
If you want to read the article click the following link “What are the best floor protectors for chairs and barstools”
In this article I will give you a brief overview.
There a several options and I’ll share each one of them.
Option 1: Felt floor protectors, these are the least expensive but also the least effective with the main problem being, “peeling off” after a short period of time and they are hard to keep clean. That being said they are still way better than not having protectors fitted at all and they help the chair slide smoothly and quietly.
Fitting is straight forward as long as you clean the bottom of the chair properly, that includes a light sand to remove any grit or ground in dirt. See image
Option 2: Felt floor protectors that are secured to the chair and designed to stay on and not peel off. The most effective felt of this type is the Slipstick Gorila Felt Floor Protector, they are fitted to the chair by an innovative 5 prong system that keep the protector firmly attached to the chair leg for a long period of time (at least 12 months guaranteed) After fitting the chair will slide smoothly and quietly.
There are 2 types of floor protectors in this range and both require different fitting methods. The CB257 25mm Round Gorilla Felt Floor Protector is designed for straight leg chairs and can be fitted by removing any existing feet attached to the chair leg and using a small hammer attach the Gorilla Foot by lightly tapping the foot into the chair leg.
The CB259 25mm Round Gorilla Felt Floor Protectors for angled leg chairs are a screw on foot and can be fitted by removing any existing feet and pre-drilling the center of the leg with a 2.5mm drill bit and drilling to a depth of 25mm before screwing on. (This helps to prevent splitting when the foot is screwed on)
Option 3: Plastic & rubber chair leg protectors. The product brand is Slipstick Foot floor protectors for chairs. These are a long term solution with a 5 Year warranty and are attached to the chair leg with an adhesive and a screw. They have the added advantage of being easy to clean and they are very long wearing.
Fitting requires a little more work but it’s worth it, knowing that you have a permanent solution and more than likely you’ll never need to replace them again, at least not in the short term.
Fitting instructions with option 3 are the same as the CB259 and are a screw on foot as well. These also need to be fitted by removing any existing feet and pre-drilling the centre of the leg with a 2.5mm drill bit and drilling to a depth of 25mm before screwing on. (This helps to prevent splitting when the foot is screwed on)
A quick search on the internet will reveal there are many floor protector options on the market but they provide little on no information for you to make an informed choice about the best product to use.
After years of extensive research and testing I have found the brand and options listed above are a safe choice and 2 of the options in that range have a guarantee, not something you will find other brands offering when your looking around for floor protectors.
