Frequently Asked Questions: Wonderspot Emergency Spill Kit
Use the PSP Super Absorbent Chamois Sponge immediately to mop up and absorb as much liquid as possible before it wicks deeper into fibres and backing. The goal is fast removal and fast drying—this is often the difference between a removable spill and a permanent stain, especially on rugs and upholstery with deep pile or textured weaves. If a mark remains after blotting, follow up with PSP Wonderspot Encapsulating Spot Cleaner rather than scrubbing. Use strictly as directed
Wonderspot works by encapsulating the spill, which helps lift contamination without aggressive agitation, reducing the risk of pile distortion, fraying, or “fuzzing” on upholstery and rugs. Scrubbing also pushes colourants and proteins deeper into fibres and can spread the spill outward, creating a larger stain ring. Encapsulation plus controlled blotting is particularly important on loop piles, delicate upholstery fabrics and rugs where abrasion can permanently change texture. Avoid spraying directly onto the fabric or rug instead get a damp well rung out micro-fibre cloth and spray the spot cleaner onto the cloth and use that to clean off marks especially on delicate fabrics or viscose rugs.
For most upholstery stains, blotting and gentle wiping are the safest approach because aggressive scrubbing can distort the pile, roughen fibres, or remove colour on fabrics with unstable dyes. The product directions explicitly warn against heavy rubbing to reduce the risk of fabric damage or colour removal. If a stain is thick (e.g., sauce), lift solids first with a blunt knife or a spoon, then spray and wipe.
Avoid using Wonderspot (or any wet spot-cleaning method) on textiles that are not colourfast or are labelled dry-clean only, because moisture can trigger dye bleed, watermarking, or texture change—especially on some viscose/rayon blends. The product page explicitly advises testing first in an inconspicuous area to check for colour change or reactions. If the spill is on a fragile antique textile, a viscose or jute-backed rug, or a piece with unstable dyes, controlled blotting and professional assessment is safer than applying cleaner across the area.
The Emergency Spill Kit is intended for upholstery, rugs, and carpet, with Wonderspot described as safe on most of these textiles except viscose and is effective on most common spills.
The Chamois Sponge is designed to absorb liquid without dripping, which helps reduce spread across cushions, rug piles and carpet tufts.
For best results, the page notes Wonderspot performs best on textiles pre-treated with DecorGuard Fibre Protector or Microseal, because protected fibres absorb less and release spills more easily.
The main causes of rings are over-wetting and uneven drying—blotting with the chamois sponge first reduces the amount of liquid left to migrate. Wonderspot is described as leaving no residue and helping prevent resoiling, which matters because sticky residues attract dirt and make a spot reappear faster. In humid Australian conditions, accelerate drying (airflow, fan) so dissolved contaminants don’t wick back to the surface while the area dries slowly
Rinse the chamois sponge with cold water before use and squeeze out excess water, then wash thoroughly in warm water after each use to remove spill contaminants. The page also recommends an occasional machine wash with synthetics, or washing in a mild bleaching solution, and storing the chamois sponge in the fridge to prevent drying out (rehydrate with cold water if it does dry). Proper care keeps the chamois sponge absorbent and reduces the risk of transferring old residues onto the next spill area.
Always test in an inconspicuous area before full application. Results may vary depending on fabric age, fabric type and fabric cleaning instructions provided by the fabric manufacturer. This is a DIY product and Aussie Furniture Care is not responsible for damage caused by incorrect use.
